Wastewater Treatment Technologies

The two wastewater plants owned and operated by PCWASA utilize different technologies or methods for treatment.

The Larry B. Turner/Line Creek Plant is a conventional activated sludge plant, with additional filtration and UV disinfection, allowing for the reuse of its treated wastewater to irrigate a local golf course, in addition to being directly discharged into a nearby stream.  Activated sludge is a process for treating sewage using air and a biological floc composed of bacteria and protozoa.

The Rockaway Wastewater Treatment Facility is a sequence batch reactor (SBR) plant.  SBR facilities treat sewer with the use of oxygen bubbled through the wastewater to reduce the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD), which makes the effluent (treated wastewater) leaving the plant suitable for discharge to surface waters or for irrigation.

These treatment technologies and recycled methods utilized at PCWASA wastewater plant operations are approved and permitted under the watchful eye of the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD).
